Internet's role in fashion, rise of active male interest in fashion
Doesn't seem to be much on this. No discussion of rising popularity in male-dominated internet fashion communities (see google trends for some information/reflection, or visit some of these sites.) such as Hypebeast, Reddit's Malefashionadvice, Ask Andy, Styleforum, Superfuture, Stylezeitgeist, as well as general rising male interest in fashion as well- particularly on tumblr and twitter (hashtags like #streetwear and #menswear are popular.)
Also a lack of information on the expensive/"designer", hype-driven brands popular on the internet such as Common Projects shoes and Temple of Jawnz leather jackets -- Preceding unsigned comment added by Bbmtourne (talk o contribs) 08:29, 6 August 2013 (UTC)

Would Jennifer Graylock fit in your project as a fashion photgrapher?--Canoe1967 (talk) 21:06, 4 January 2013 (UTC)
- I suppose so, but the article would have to assert her notability within that field and do all the other things it needs to be kept. Daniel Case (talk) 05:01, 5 January 2013 (UTC)

First fashion edit-a-thon + image donation
Dear everybody,
Join us in taking fashion to Wikipedia on Friday the 22nd of March, when there there will be an edit-a-thon in Stockholm, Sweden with fashion as its theme! As you know currently the fashion coverage in Wikipedia is rather limited and we would like to help changing that.
For this event we have received an image donation with hundreds of pictures from the Nordic Museum and also a first donation of eight pictures from ModeMuseum (Antwerpen), and during the edit-a-thon in Stockholm we will create and expand fashion articles in both Swedish and English by using the fashion pictures uploaded from the museums. Please see here for the categories: Commons:Category:Projekt: Mode och dräkthistoria and Commons:Category:Images from MoMu - Fashion Museum Province of Antwerp.
We would love your help with connecting the pictures to suitable articles (either existing or new ones) in preparation for the event so that the participants - student and GLAM experts without much prior knowledge of Wikipedia editing - can get started easier and focus on writing! You can help out by adding pictures and suggested articles here.
Besides improving Wikipedia's fashion coverage, we hope to show GLAMs just how productive an event like this can be and how much their images will be used. This will hopefully increase their interest in making more and larger image donations in the future! You can all really make a difference by adding the images to suitable articles and expanding the texts! If you cannot be present at the Nordic museum we invite you to participate online during the event. Lets show the GLAMs, experts and newbies the power of our international movement and how fun it can be to contribute to free knowledge!
The Stockholm fashion event is organized by Europeana Fashion, Europeana, Stockholm University, the Nordic Museum and Wikimedia Sweden.
I hope that you will join in!
Best,
John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 22:17, 16 March 2013 (UTC)

- Excellent (Wish I knew enough Swedish to say something complimentary ...) What times (local; we can convert for our home time zones as needed) will it be held? If there is the possibility of being patched in through, say, Skype or something, I'm interested (and I might get others involved). Daniel Case (talk) 01:47, 17 March 2013 (UTC)
- Oops, wait ... I checked my calendar, and that day may not be good. But keep me posted. Daniel Case (talk) 01:48, 17 March 2013 (UTC)

- Hi!
- The event starts at 10.30 a.m. Central European Time and people will start writing articles at around 12.30.
- Could you tell me a bit more how you are thinking that you would like to get patched in? Do you mean to listen on the presentations? In general I am picturing the discussion page on sv:Wikipediadiskussion:Skrivstuga/Mode to be a central hub for discussions (it's perfectly fine to write there in English). It would be really great if you could get others involved as well!
- Also, if you or anyone else have suggestions on what articles the images could illustrate (missing or existing) that would be great (preferably before Friday). Perhaps the images could illustrate a specific style, a type of clothing, a fashion trend, a fashion decade, specific designers etc. My own expertise lays elsewhere, so I would be very grateful for any help! Hat questions
Does anyone know what type of hats these are and what articles they could illustrate?
John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 18:01, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
- Fabulous pics! The one in the middle would be great for Poke bonnet and Straw hat (as they all appear to be woven straw). The garment at the top of the same picture is a pelerine (which needs an article doing!) The one second from right is also poke bonnets. The first one shows a couple of toque hats, although the toque article needs expanding to cover these 19th/early 20th century women's hats. I think the others are generally "hats", specific hat names don't leap to mind although they would all be good candidates for the general fashion by era categories. - Thanks! I have added three of them on the list! John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 17:13, 19 March 2013 (UTC)

Sarah Jessica Parker dress
I was looking at Category:Individual dresses and wondering why there is no Sarah Jessica Parker dress. I remember one (black I think) where she walked across the awards ceremony stage with a long slit availing her leggy body with FMPs on. Apparently googling Sarah Jessica Parker dress yields ma ny results. Does she not have one iconic dress?--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 17:38, 13 July 2013 (UTC)
- All I've got is a tangent: In a piece about paparazzi, "Celebrities do fight back: in an attempt to deflate the market value of paparazzi photography, Madonna and Sarah Jessica Parker wear the same clothes in public every day." - Colors (magazine). (However, this Spring 2013 issue is on "Making the News", and carries a disclaimer at the end that some stories were deliberately falsified. So confirmation would be required before that gets added to any article). Hope that amuses. -Quiddity (talk) 18:57, 13 July 2013 (UTC)
- I have to say that I cannot think of a single Sarah Jessica Parker dress, apart from her pink feathery Oscar de la Renta dress, that stands out in the memory. I do remember her wearing a bizarre green hat, but I don't think we need articles on every single individual dress that receives more than a passing mention - unless the coverage and notability endure over a significant period of time - and even then, they may be more appropriately covered in a few lines in a Red carpet fashion of (year) article. Not every dress will be the Green Versace dress of Jennifer Lopez. Mabalu (talk) 23:46, 13 July 2013 (UTC)

Business casual
The article Business casual turned up in Category:Stubs but I noticed that it's been gradually diminished by several different editors (some IPs and vandalism reverts, but not all) from a peak size of 5.7k to about 10% of that, with removal of sourced content. It's now an unsourced single sentence with an unsourced image which I've got doubts about (is a sleeveless top really acceptable as "business casual" for women?) Does anyone know if File:Serpent Belt.jpg is a fashion object or an art object? If it's art, it requires a fair-use rationale, if it's fashion, does it require such? Basic clothing does not, but this isn't basic fashion, it's art-fashion. -- 76.65.128.222 (talk) 02:14, 25 August 2013 (UTC)

Three quarter pants, Capri pants
Are Capri pants a specific style of pant, or is that one of several names for three quarter pants? It strikes me that perhaps the former page should be merged to the latter, which is currently a short stub. But people with more specialized knowledge may have other ideas. Cnilep (talk) 03:24, 9 September 2013 (UTC)
Capris are pretty specific. To me, three-quarter pants simply means any style of trouser that is that length - so a pair of gaucho pants (which for some reason redirects to Trousers which doesn't even mention them...) or culottes, or even cut-off jeans, they are all three-quarter. Capris to me describe a tight-fitting or at least slim-fitted pair of pants, something worn by Audrey Hepburn on a bicycle... So no to the redirect there, but maybe redirect to Trousers. (And having noticed it, a standalone article for gaucho pants might be appropriate...) Mabalu (talk) 11:13, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

- Should "flankers" have a link in Template:Infobox fragrance as

does? It's a technical term, and I think could do with an explanation - Should "flankers" have stand-alone articles, or should they redirect to the "pillar" fragrance? In most cases I would say yes, but this might need to be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Wikipedia talk:Hardy Amies Ltd page
Hi, Would it be possible to get help with editing this page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardy_Amies ? I am a member of the company and therefore not deemed a reliable source. I need to add a section regarding the new store opening at no.8 Savile Row. There are numerous articles online (secondary sources); http://www.telegraph.co.uk/luxury/mens-style/45158/hardy-amies-new-flagship-store.html http://www.drapersonline.com/news/hardy-amies-opens-new-savile-row-store/5064069.article#.VBhFGfldWAU http://therakeonline.com/uncategorized/hardy-amies-opens-at-no-8/
Would the factual information from these articles be deemed reliable enough to be used underneath a new heading named 'No.8 Savile Row' on the Hardy Amies Ltd page? Also, is it possible to remove information? As there is a lot of Sir Edwin Hardy Amies' history which seems to be directly copied from this page; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwin_Hardy_Amies which isn't really relevant to the brand.
Thank you in advance for any help anyone can offer 195.171.80.170 (talk) 14:22, 16 September 2014 (UTC)

- Hi again, Anne Delong - this guy SOUNDS like he should be notable but the article is ABSOLUTELY crammed with unsourced stuff. Sounds autobiographical, but if he is represented in that many collections/museums, has had that long a career, and the pictures (albeit copyvio?) show evidence of coverage in major fashion publications, then he OUGHT to be at least worth a simple stub. Bikini on peer review
Bikini, one of the oldest articles of this project has gone into a peer review here. It was created on Novemeber 1, 2001, One day after Japan. That was before Abraham Lincoln (Nov 4), France (Nov 4) and California (Nov 17) were created on Wikipedia. (courtesy: TonyTheTiger) It also is a highly viewed article. If you search for Bikini using google the first return is this article. Page visitation reached its highest in 2011, and the highest number of visitors come from India, Mexico and Spain.
A lot of work has gone into the article. It kept expanding and eventually three new spin-off articles were created - History of the bikini (a good article), Bikini in popular culture and Bikini variants. The popular culture article split its own spin-offs into Category:Individual bikinis. The variants article in turn split into specific articles for Monokini and Tankini. Work has gone into other related article as well, like Thong (clothing) and Bikini waxing.
The review is not a success because of low participation. Can you participate, please? Aditya(talk o contribs) 21:10, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

Leaflet For Wikiproject Fashion At Wikimania 2014 (updated version)
Please note: This is an updated version of a previous post that I made.
Hi all,
My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.
One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.
This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:
o Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film
o Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.
o Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.
o Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____
o Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen's Collaborative, The Signpost
The deadline for submissions is 1st July 2014
For more information or to sign up for one for your project, go to:

Dear fashion experts: This old draft was never submitted to be in the encyclopedia. Is this a notable fashion designer, and should the page be kept and improved? --Anne Delong (talk) 15:10, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
- Anne Delong Delete as a direct copy-and-paste from the designer's website so it is copyvio, not even neutral copyvio. The website is down but I saw the Google cache. Even if she is notable (which I really can't ascertain from a quick search) she should have a new article started from scratch. Mabalu (talk) 15:32, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

Wallpaper group theory
Wallpaper group is an article written by mathematicians but this can explain a lot in fashion. To summarize the article, there is a classification of patterns which, if applied, can put any pattern into 1 of 17 categories.
I would be interested to learn if any research has ever been done to track cultural preferences for textile prints and weaves using any of these wallpaper groups in preference to others, and if this model gives insight to historical migration of fashion tastes or explains current trends.
Right now seemingly no fashion articles link to this article. Blue Rasberry (talk) 12:47, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

Notable Kerry Washington dress?
Is this Kerry Washington dress a notable individual dress?--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 08:01, 4 June 2014 (UTC)
- In my opinion? No. Never heard of it before, not sure I've seen it before, although I've not really looked into red carpet fashion for a while. I need to get back to those articles. It would need to have received repeated coverage, consideration and assessment to qualify as a notable individual dress, and I don't think it has. Probably worth a mention in a Red carpet fashion of 2013 article though. Mabalu (talk) 09:08, 4 June 2014 (UTC)

Top-Importance articles
I generated a list of the Top Importance articles in WP:FASHION and disagree with some of the articles that have been included. In particular, I disagree that Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, Imelda Marcos, Victoria Beckham, and Hairstyles in the 1950s are must-have[s] for a print encyclopedia[1] for this project. I'm sure if I went digging I could find other articles that appear to have the wrong importance level as well. Does anyone object if I go ahead and fix all of these? Thanks! --Ca2james (talk) 21:49, 26 July 2014 (UTC)

Notability standards for models
Is there a way to come up with a set of notability standards for models other than the general WP:N and WP:GNG. I was thinking that there could be a list of things that confer automatic notability for a model:
- Solo Vogue cover (US, Paris, UK, Italian)
- Victoria's Secret Fashion Show appearance
- Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue
- Face of a worldwide brand.
Thoughts?--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 23:33, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
-
- Is the Victoria's Secret show really that major? I'd note that being a Pirelli Calendar model would be another benchmark as Pirelli seem to only choose the most notable models of the day. There appear to be a number of Victoria's Secret models who do not have articles despite being in the show. I'd be inclined to consider the Pirelli calendar more of an indicator of notability. Definitely agree that being a spokesmodel/"face" for an international brand indicates notability as a model. It's a tough call - many of these models receive huge exposure and are certainly very notable in their field, but may not have significant notability by WP standards due to the coverage being largely visual. Mabalu (talk) 23:57, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
- VSFS is a lingerie model standard, SISwim is a swimsuit model standard. I have never seen the Pirelli calendar is it swimsuits or lingerie? P.S. My list was just to get the conversation started. I am open to suggestions from others around the world. It certainly would not surprise me if other countries like France, Italy or Brazil had other notability benchmarks to propose.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 02:59, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
- The Pirelli calendar is high-class pin-up stuff, but uses many leading fashion models. It is shot by many of the best photographers - including Norman Parkinson, Sarah Moon, Avedon, Testino, Leibovitz, Lagerfeld, etc. Very much a showcase of the leading talent of any particular year - the best photographers, etc. It certainly has a very high reputation for what it essentially is. Mabalu (talk) 12:37, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
- It could be a fashion model standard along with Vogue. I think with basic standards for lingerie, swimsuit and fashion modelling in the works we would be well on our way. What would be a good standard for runway models. Is there a certain set of Fashion Week events that are considered the elite events for models to walk?--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 15:27, 18 August 2014 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal
Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Hello fashionable ones.... Is this old AfC submission about a notable person? If so, I am willing to edit the article to NPOV. --Anne Delong (talk) 03:50, 1 December 2014 (UTC)
- Hmm, looks possibly notable to me. Vogue (at least on their website) covered the closing of her last venture,[2] which suggests notability to me. Most of the press seems specific to Atelier Meyer rather than Haid herself. Don't feel strongly one way or the other though. Calliopejen1 (talk) 21:25, 2 December 2014 (UTC)
- Also, her opening & relaunch was covered by Women's Wear Daily. A bit more background via brief excerpt from the December 29, 2009 WWD article: "Meanwhile, last January, Carmen Haid, a former communications director for Tommy Hilfiger in the U.K., and fashion journalist Alice Kodell launched the vintage clothing Web site Atelier-Mayer.com. The store takes a similarly historical approach to vintage clothing. It was inspired by Haid's great aunt, the late haute couture dressmaker Klaudia Mayer, who founded the original Atelier Mayer in 1927. Haid believes the launch comes at an opportune moment, as consumers are questioning the value of fast fashion." Fashionethics (talk) 09:12, 13 December 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!
Hello everyone!
You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!
Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

runway modelling
I think that anyone who walks at one of the Big Four Fashion Weeks has had lots of runway experience. However, the press often announces models who are making their runway debuts. I am not sure what this means or how I should word things on WP. Could someone look at Emily Ratajkowski and make sure I have described her NYFW and Paris FW debuts correctly. Is it possible that she has never walked a runway before. Also, feel free to get involved in Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Emily Ratajkowski/archive3.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 17:07, 16 March 2016 (UTC)
carncross umbrella
Alan Carncross has nearly five-thousand inventions, patents, copyrights and never been thought about before, ideas. From the first Small Folding Umbrella, which was made from Strong Lightweight Duralumin - which her Majesty The Queen had. - Also patented Stiletto-Heels - Also 'Safety-Catches for Jewelry' and 'Magneto-Striction Coils' Leading To Hospitals-Ultra-Scans etc etc etc etc All came from Alan - merely altering a 'Battered Old Camera', which became a "Photon Catching Camera". That Old Camera was a 'Spring-Wound-Movie Camera' from the 1920's. It cost only £5. It helped to create all those nearly 5,000 inventions -- from captured, entirely-free, "Photon-Intelligence Insights". Four German Computers, then split ordinary entirely-free-light into separate Rainbow-frequencies, which could be individually removed, to reveal, probably never been seen before, "intelligent-Photon- frequencies".
Intelligence frequencies can be modified with what Alan (for many decades) has called "Future-Time" - instead of using the usual "Past-Time" which Schools unfortunately constantly teach - - Those Photons and the information they accidentally (or purposely carry ) are instantly entering human brains,. Accidental Mentally Conditioned Photons, are probably the reason, why many inventors (like Alan) say that they simply found the idea in their head without any previous conscious thoughts about their new invention or idea they have had. near Five-Thousand, easy never been though about before ideas should prove that Photon proposition.
After all. Our Ancient Uneducated Ancestors Lived In Damp Caves or on Stonehenge. They had to start a mental progression to our present modern world. THEY ONLY HAD LIGHT ---- THEY DIDN'T HAVE SCHOOLS, INSTRUCTIONS, BOOKS, OR UNIVERSITIES ALAN CARNCROSS is STILL INVENTING FROM BETWEEN 3-0 am AND 5-0 a-m every morning even when now fast approaching a 100 years old. -- Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.48.209.220 (talk) 09:05, 20 March 2016 (UTC)
No WP:FA models?
I am just realizing that this project has not gotten any models promoted to WP:FA (based on Category:FA-Class fashion articles). - Hi Alexmar983! I think it could be rescued. The speedy criteria doesn't seem appropriate to me. If anything, bits do read like strange automated translation. It has potential to be a decent article, and I think the subject is absolutely notable. I do have to ask why it is not at André Laug though, doesn't seem like it needs disambiguating.... - For examples of what is needed , see Elizabeth Hurley's black Versace dress (I disagree with a recent title change from Black Versace dress of Elizabeth Hurley --the emphasis should be on the dress or Jennifer Lopez's green Versace dress (again, I think the title should be Green Versace dress of Jennifer Lopez. - DGG, It seems to me that what would help is a redux or two, some mentions in books over time, and for this to be one of David Koma's most enduring creations. I think this is closer than the other one because of the year end recognitions. In other words, this one may just need time. Can you tell me if [hollywoodlife.com/2015/08/11/emily-ratajkowski-we-are-your-friends-premiere-dress-london/ this type of commentary] would be helpful to making it notable now if that were a WP:RS (which I don't think it is).--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 07:23, 5 June 2016 (UTC)
- DGG, the backstory behind this significance has a lot of encyclopedic interest. 1.) This was the European premiere on the press tour of her first leading role, 2.) multiple citations above mention that this dress marked her ascension as a fashion star, 3.) The following month she made her runway debut at New York Fashion Week, 4.) At the end of the year Vogue Italia listed her in its best dressed with this dress pictured, 5.) At the end of the year Vogue listed her atop its new breakout beauty stars, 6.) At the end of the year this was selected among the fashion moments of the year by the Evening Standard with this dress depicted. This is more than just "The dress was impressive"--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 13:47, 5 June 2016 (UTC)
- Personally, I would consider the information and referencing about the dress to be important, and the back story relatively insignificant from the point of view of an article about a dress in encyclopedia. The hollywood.com story is a usable start. DGG ( talk ) 15:34, 5 June 2016 (UTC)
- DGG, Are you saying with that article as the backbone, I can start an article.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 02:04, 6 June 2016 (UTC)
- I would wait until I had at least one or two other similarly strong articles. DGG ( talk ) 04:39, 6 June 2016 (UTC)
- DGG, FYI, I have started cobbling together the page at User:TonyTheTiger/sandbox/Emily Ratajkowski's blue Koma dress. I think that The Daily Telegraph had a good article. I will see what else I can find. Although I have seen a British Vogue article with 10 best dressed photos (not including Ratajkowski), I have heard that there was a December 2015 edition with 63 best dressed selections for the year. I am going to run this down and see if she was included. Note that in this article I mentioned the other outfit that she wore on August 11 to eliminate any confusion. For that week, the majority of places that selected her best dressed for the week showed a picture of that dress. Should I also mention other outlets that named her best dressed that week and depicted other outfits? I could put together a paragraph of other supporting outfits for her best dressed week performance.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 16:03, 6 June 2016 (UTC)

DGG ( talk ) 02:44, 5 June 2016 (UTC)
- Hey - I'm late to the party, but I have mixed feelings about these individual dress articles - (although I strongly agree with criticism of recent article moves - the person who moved them did NOT get consensus or even ask anyone before going ahead and doing so). Anyway, I am inclined to think that we should be very strict about such articles - there should be significant commentary and coverage on the individual dress, not solely mentions in general overviews of what's being worn on the red carpet. The Versace dresses of Jennifer Lopez and Elizabeth Hurley are perfect examples of this, as they have received so much attention and consideration. You should have at least three rock-solid sources that specifically discuss and analyse the garment in depth, before going ahead and creating an article on it.
I would also argue that if the content of an article can be condensed into two or three sentences, or a paragraph, then it is probably better off in a general article on that year's red carpet fashions (I have fallen behind on these...); or as a section in the designer's or wearer's article, even if there are sufficent good quality sources to make it a candidate for a standalone article. We need to make sure that such articles are incredibly solid and well-covered. I think this is a very relevant AFD for an article that really pushed the boundaries of how much coverage was sufficient to qualify a standalone article. Mabalu (talk) 16:10, 6 June 2016 (UTC)
-
- Yes, I'd have voted merge there, if I'd seen it. The category was really created for significant historic items of costume, mostly in museums, and often with unknown owners (or alternatively royal wedding dresses etc). Runway dresses should normally be merged - we already have too many imo - and the standards for stand-alone articles are probably too lax already. Johnbod (talk) 16:35, 6 June 2016 (UTC)
- If there had been a SINGLE valid merge option, then I would have voted merge as well - but the problem was that there were three equally strong, valid places to which the Rebecca Twigley dress could have been merged, but at the expense of overwhelming all three articles with undue bias. So it was a really thorny issue. But yes, having read the drafted article on Emily Ratajkowski's dress, I don't think there is sufficient depth of coverage to support a standalone article for this particular dress. Lots of coverage, but it seems to mainly be tabloid type/Top 10 type coverage, or passing mentions of the dress's role in making her famous, rather than focused discussion of the dress itself. I think it is another borderline case - I like a good influential frock but I also question the need for this standalone article at this point in time. I would want to revisit it in a couple of year's time at the very least and see whether anyone is still discussing it in depth then (as turned out to be the case with the Twigley frock). It's currently good enough for several sentences's worth of commentary in Emily Ratajkowski and the designer's page, but to me, I don't feel it is really a valid standalone article option yet, if it ever will be. Mabalu (talk) 19:36, 6 June 2016 (UTC)

- DGG, Mabalu, Johnbod, Calliopejen1, and GRuban: Thanks for commenting. I am going to leave the dress at User:TonyTheTiger/sandbox/Emily Ratajkowski's blue Koma dress. The only other thing I can do for the article in the near future is determine whether it was in the December 2015 British Vogue print edition (if anyone has access to that let me know) best dressed list. I don't think we can establish whether this is an enduring creation less than a year later, but it does have some of the elements of such. I'll be watching to see if this is included in fashion exhibitions and/or museum collections, becomes an enduring Koma creation, notable Ratajkowski dress, whether others wear the dress at important occasions and whether the dress is topical in the press in the future.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 19:51, 7 June 2016 (UTC)

Clothing industry vs garment industry
Question from a category obsessed user here. Why do these two separate categories exist Category:Garment industry and Category:Clothing industry, when the article says, they are the same? I understand the difference between textile industry and clothing industry, the latter is the parent concept of the former, but why two categories when their titles are synonyms? I call the creator of Category:Clothing industry, which was only created some months ago, compared to the 10 year old Category:Garment industry. @Kku:. CN1 (talk) 17:12, 3 July 2016 (UTC)

However, I disagree with the idea of renaming it 'Clothing industry' or the underlying reasoning that the term is "used more often", because I believe that to be incorrect. People in the garment industry call it the garment industry. It may be an antiquated or less used term by the general public, but that is not the point. People in the industry also use the term haberdasher, milliner, etc. I also think the categories themselves support this. As is stated, the category clothing industry was only started some months ago, and garment industry category is 10 years old. The clothing industry category only has 3 subcategories and 7 pages, whereas garment industry has 8 subcategories and 41 pages."Centerone (talk) 15:26, 7 July 2016 (UTC)
- I have to agree with Centerone's very reasonable and well thought out assessment. While "clothing" is indeed more colloquial, the garment industry is more technically accurate from a terminology perspective. Mabalu (talk) 15:36, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

Media upload of images from Museum Catharijneconvent
Dear project-members,
I would like to draw your attention to a media upload that may be of relevance to your project:
Museum Catharijneconvent in Utrecht, The Netherlands, holds an important collection of Christian religious textiles and clothing from northern Europe, ranging in date from the medieval to modern periods. The museum has recently donated a collection of approximately 600 high-resolution images of these textiles to Wikimedia Commons. This donation is a follow-up to an older donation of some 2400 images of other objects and paintings in their collection.

List of headgear
Hey fashion folks! I'm used to counter-vandalism on WP but still a novice at restructuring articles. I stumbled across List of headgear and the structure of the page seemed odd. I understand that a standard textual list wouldn't be appropriate for this type of content, but the gallery felt a bit overwhelming. Also, the method in which the hats were grouped felt a bit strange, and the article is awfully large, maybe a couple splits are in order? Anywho, I'm all about WP:SOFIXIT but before I start tearing it apart, I kinda wanted to get some feedback from y'all first, as I'm woefully inept at fashion ^_^ Your feedback is more than appreciated! Expansion of cosmetology and beauty education articles
Hello friends. After researching and publishing the article on cosmetology luminary Leo Passage, I've gone down that rabbit hole and want to publish more articles in the field. There are some famous hairdressers out there and some who've started prominent businesses (like American Crew and Aquage and the like) in addition to their award-winning hairstyling.
Any tips on making people in this fledgeling field (in WP anyway) seem "notable"? Not everyone can be Vidal Sassoon. I'm curious about how to essentially "open new territory" in the fashion sector of WP. Thank you in advance. Chicagoese (talk) 22:41, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
- Chicagoese I do not recommend trying to make articles for people who do not pass WP:N. In short, this has failed several hundred thousand times and there is no community awareness of any prominent success story.
- Especially until you find your way around wiki I encourage you to spend your time editing by the rules. Once you know the rules, then consider whether you want to risk loss of your time by advancing to the limits. There are a lot of designers who are notable who could be covered. Instead of starting with names and seeking journalism, start with good publications and see what names are there. Blue Rasberry (talk) 00:48, 1 February 2017 (UTC)
- @Bluerasberry: Lane, I think what we owe this editor is a discussion of what, exactly, makes a cosmetologist notable within the field. I know nothing about this. What periodicals or websites that matter would count for assessing instances of non-trivial coverage? Would celebrity clients count (something which would tend to lead to that coverage anyway)? Would having one's own name on a brand help? Are there awards given to cosmetologists that would be of importance to people in the field? Daniel Case (talk) 07:42, 1 February 2017 (UTC)
- @Daniel Case and Chicagoese: Yes, please excuse me if I was not open enough. The baseline expectation for establishing notability is third party publications. Starting with that, lots of material would be accepted.
- I am not prepared to say that any of the things mentioned by Daniel count if they cannot be documented in third-party publications. That is, if the only source of this information is self-published, then I would not be ready to say that any of these establish notability. One of the seemingly most respected awards, Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, is almost absent from any identified media coverage. With that being one of the best-funded and most prominent awards and still getting less attention, then I can only expect that this sector of journalism will be challenging. I would talk anyone through on the options but again, I have great hesitation to let the conversation go in any direction except trying to identify some published third-party sources.
Thank you both! Yes, the Academy Awards example is kind of what I'm implying. Notable in field does not always equal notable in journalism. I have access to a lot trade publications, with a lot of individuals rising to the surface, but those have been looked at less credibly than, say, the Wall Street Journal... Chicagoese (talk) 14:33, 1 February 2017 (UTC)
- Chicagoese Trade journals and industry publications are great, if they hire independent journalists. Bias for the industry is fine, and we even tolerate bias for advertisers in trade journals, but what we really wish to avoid is accepting content which is overly commissioned by an organization or individual to promote themselves. If a trade journal employed their own staff writers and covered industry events, then fine. If a trade journal is publishing press releases provided by companies and seems so defenseless as to have no journalistic control, then we pass on that.
- No one expects highly specific industry sectors to all find a place in popular general interest publications, and in wiki, we do treat some trade journals on equal standing as WSJ or any other source. High school newspapers have more journalistic integrity than press releases, so as long as there is some respect for journalism and independent writing, share what you have. Requesting thoughts on merge of American Look (fashion movement) with Sportswear (fashion)
If anyone is around, I would really appreciate thoughts on this merger proposal, as I have a conflict of interest so would appreciate third party opinions. Mabalu (talk) 09:51, 4 April 2017 (UTC)
Translating Bottega Veneta
First and foremost, I have a paid COI in regards to BV (see my userpage). Secondly, please forgive me if this is an inappropriate place to ask, but I'm working on getting the English article content translated for a number of different languages and was curious if any members of WP:Fashion might be able to help out. I've asked around at WP:Translation and a few other places, but without any real progress. Any help would be appreciated!--FacultiesIntact (talk) 00:50, 14 April 2017 (UTC)

Franzi help
Hi, I have written Franzi page, but i see some issues. I want to understand what can i do :) For example i say that Franzi is one of the oldest italian brand in the luxury leather goods, because it was founded in 1864 and I know that Prada is from 1913, Gucci is fom 1921, Fontana milano is from 1915, Fendi is from 1925, Ferragamo is from 1927, Bottega Veneta is from 1966.. I know there are no sources that say the cronological order of the foundation of all the italian company to mention as a source, but it is an obvious deduction from the facts. Even more if we think that Guccio Gucci itself was an employee of Franzi. But since I'm new at wikipedia i want to understand if I went wrong using this deduction system and if yes, what can i do to do the things in the right way. A true thanks :) --Carlo ch (talk) 14:15, 26 May 2017 (UTC)
- Carlo ch, I'd say that while that sort of thing (deduced facts of which the premises can be sourced, but not the conclusion) is not best practice, it may be the best thing to do in a particular scenario where the fact is noteworthy, uncontroversial and there is no way to find a source for the fact itself. It might be useful to use a sourced footnote to explain how you came to that conclusion, otherwise readers and other editors might not understand the relevance of your references. (Use <ref group=upper-alpha> to separate your footnote from your references.) --A L T E R C A R I ? 12:24, 19 June 2017 (UTC)
